50th Ward Aldermanic Forum
The League of Women Voters, the Jewish Neighborhood Development Council, and the West Ridge Chamber of Commerce invite you to a forum featuring the candidates for the 50th Ward Aldermanic race. This forum will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bernard Horwich JCC – 3003 W. Touhy Ave.
The candidates’ forum will focus on issues related to economic development in the West Ridge/West Rogers Park community. The moderator will present all the questions for the forum, however, the questions will be sourced from members of the community. Please send questions that you would like to have asked of the candidates to info@westridgechamber.org.
Note that the organizers reserve the right to omit any questions based on relevance to the theme or due to time constraints. We look forward to a robust conversation about the future of our community and hope that you can make it.
The forum will also be live streamed via Facebook Live. Access the WestRidge Chamber of Commerce Facebook page at 2:00 p.m. Chicago time on Sunday, February 10th.
Design for the new 50th Ward library to be revealed TONIGHT!
On behalf of LEARN West Rogers Park, I want to thank you for taking time to fill out our library survey. This coalition of community organizations, businesses and individuals has worked tirelessly over the past two years to advocate for a 21st Century library in the 50thWard and to ensure community involvement in the process.
Whether you signed our petition to create awareness for the need of a new library and/or shared your thoughts on how this new library can best serve our community via the survey, your input continues to be vital in shaping this new community cornerstone.
On Monday, May 1, 2017, Alderman Silverstein and representatives from Chicago Housing Authority and Chicago Public Library will reveal the design for the new Northtown Library Branch to be located at the northwest corner of Western and Pratt Avenues.
This public meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Warren Park, 6601 N. Western Avenue.

Safety concerns have dominated the news in Chicago. Our neighborhood, although still one of the safest in the city, has experienced serious incidents, as well. It is our responsibility as residents to know the facts about this situation and what steps the police are taking to deal with this challenge to all of us.
On Tuesday, July 19, 7 p.m. at the Bernard Horwich JCC, 3003 W. Touhy, Alderman Debra Silverstein is inviting the community to meet new Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, as well as 24th District Commander Roberto Nieves and 17th District Commander Elias Voulgaris. The 50th Ward is covered by these two districts.
This is our chance to hear the facts as opposed to sharing rumors. What is the trendline of the number of discharged firearms, shootings and violent crimes? What is the level of police presence in the neighborhood as compared to past years? What can our leaders do to increase police presence and increase its effectiveness? What other concerns of residents require the attention of our top police leadership?
This is our chance to get answers to our questions from the top leadership of the Chicago Police Department. It is imperative that we attend this meeting and we thank Alderman Silverstein for making it happen.

More than 400 WRP residents of all ages -but especially moms, dads and kids – enjoyed an afternoon of socializing and community building at Back-to-School Fun Day, Sunday, Aug. 31, on the grounds of the Bernard Horwich Center, sponsored by Jewish Community Council of West Rogers Park and Associated Talmud Torahs of Chicago.
Featuring free rides for children including a moonwalk and rock-climbing wall, musical entertainment, door prizes, and food for purchase from Great Chicago Food & Beverage, the event provided a bounty of information from participating exhibitors on services and opportunities available in the neighborhood.
“Our goal was to connect community members to valuable – and little known — resources,” said JCCWRP Executive Director Scott "Shalom" Klein.
JCCWRP informed guests of its mission to strengthen and preserve West Rogers Park as Chicago’s flagship Jewish neighborhood, providing a vehicle for advocacy for better amenities in the parks and a new public library; revitalization of commercial streets, and alleviating eye soars, like the blighted area behind Lincoln Village. Among other highlights, Richard Trumbo, proprietor of Music House, located at 2925 W. Devon, delighted guests with a live mini-concert and answered questions from scores of parents about music lessons for kids (www.musichouseinc.com).

Jewish Child and Family Services staff explained the “safer schools” initiative, aimed to protect children from abuse in the day-school system. (Information is available athttp://www.jcfs.org/node/677)
A volunteer for Ald. Debra Silverstein’s office advised neighbors on how to utilize her constituent services to report crime, potholes, graffiti, worn-out refuse cans, and more (visitwww.50thWardChicago.com).
Akiba Schechter Day School (www.akibaschechter.org), Council for Jewish Elderly (www.cje.net/), Sinai Health System (www.sinai.org), and HIAS(www.hias.org) also participated in the event.
