DNA Info: Vacant Movie Theater 'Eyesore' Could Become Park, Storage Facility

Howard Rieger, president of the Jewish Community Council of West Rogers Park, organized a community meeting Tuesday night about the property. He said more than 100 people attended.

“There isn’t 1 inch of the property along the [North Shore Channel] trail that’s an eyesore except for this miserable couple of acres,” Rieger said. “We’re allowing the site to be used by gangs and drug dealers. … Everything looks good around there except for this disaster.”

But now a deal is in the works to transform the property.larger

TRIBUNE

Shalom Klein, founder and chairman of Skokie-based Jewish B2B Networking, is an advocate for lowering LLC fees.

“I would put reducing them as very high on a priority list. The fee here in Illinois puts the state in a clear disadvantage with other states,” he said, adding Jewish B2B Networking has 25,000 members in Illinois, mostly in the Chicago area.

Networking Tip Of The Week – Dress For Success

Dress For Networking Success! We’ve all heard the phrase “Dress For Success”. When in the context of a job, that generally means to where what would be appropriate for your next role (your boss’ job) rather than your current role. When networking, it is a little more complicated. It may be appropriate to where full business attire, business casual, or resort casual depending on many factors. Whether attending a structured networking event or meeting someone for coffee, consider who you will be meeting, where you are meeting, the time of day, and even the culture of the city or area. For instance, you wouldn’t where a business suit to a community picnic even if you expected to meet lots of business owners there. The idea is to make a good impression and demonstrate good judgment. When in doubt, ratchet up one notch. It’s better to be the best dressed than the worst dressed in most any situation.

David St. Pierre, Met. Water Reclamation Dist.  Exec,

To Attend Meeting Targeting Neighborhood Eye Sore

6 P.M. Tuesday, March 10 at Bnei Reuven

David St. Pierre, executive director of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, has agreed to attend a community meeting called by JCCWRP aimed at eliminating a neighborhood eye sore and sparking redevelopment at the southeast corner of Devon and McCormick.

The open meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 10 at Congregation Bnei Reuven, 6350 N. Whipple in Chicago.  Community members are urged to attend.

For nearly a decade, the intersection of Devon and McCormick has been marred by a derelict expanse of land behind Lincoln Village that is controlled by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD).

MWRD is an independent state agency with an elected board of commissioners supported by tax dollars.

In December 2014, JCCWRP initiated a letter to MWRD board members that was signed by hundreds of rabbis and community leaders.   The letter demanded an end to policies that have allowed a blighted and abandoned movie theater, car wash and parking lot to degrade the area by attracting criminal activity and quashing efforts aimed to promoting commercial redevelopment.

North of Devon and south of Peterson, MWRD has helped to enhance neighboring communities with beautifications along the trail that runs from Green Bay Road to Lawrence Ave.

Peterson Park Improvement Association and Lincolnwood residents have worked cooperatively with JCCWRP on advocacy efforts aimed at securing comparable benevolent stewardship of MWRD property between Devon and Lincoln, at the hub of West Rogers Park, Peterson Park, and Lincolnwood.

“It’s time to transform this blight on our communities into a welcoming gateway,” said Howard Rieger, JCCWRP president.
